A Curvy Girls Guide: Nicole Simone's Closet

Many times I get feedbacks that I don’t talk about plus size diva’s enough so I’ve decided to bring you the curvy girls guide to fashion and style using personal style blogger Nicole Simone of curvesonabudget.com as my muse.

Being a plus size woman doesn’t make you less beautiful than all the other women out there who are size zero and just because you’re on the thicker side doesn’t mean you can’t dress up and look and feel fab anymore. I'm certain you must have realized that plus-size ladies are no longer afraid of who they are or their figure and that’s what makes it so beautiful; now the style game of curvy girls is a force that has become a must-be for every diva.

Since Nicole is one of my favorite plus-size fashionista, I would be sharing some of her most recent and favorite looks and giving style tips on how to glam in a plus-size body;

Figure out your body type – The term ‘plus size’ does not refer to your body type so if you haven’t already, start doing some research to help you figure out what your body type is. Are you an apple? An inverted triangle? An hourglass? Determining your body type will help you choose styles of clothing when shopping. Once you know what your body type is, the next thing to do is to figure out which cuts and styles will flatter your figure the most.

Find clothes that fit right – Some plus size women commit the mistake of wearing clothes that are too tight to make them look slimmer while others try to conceal their body by wearing super baggy clothes. Both these are a no-no when it comes to dressing up a plus size figure. Rather than committing these plus size fashion faux pas, look for clothes that fit like a glove instead. Not too tight nor too loose – just enough room for you to move in it.

Mix different textures – When it comes to style tips for curvy women, the key is to distract the eyes. While mixing prints is the foremost tip for these ladies, another beneficial styling trick is to combine different textures. I’m talking about mixing brocade, velvet, silk, the whole nine. Wearing these various texture can trick the eye as it can make you look slimmer instantly.

Go vertical – They say stripes are unflattering, but that is only the case if you choose the wrong direction. When it comes to style tips for curvy women, opt for vertical stripes instead of horizontal ones. Not only can it make you look leaner, vertical stripes can make you look taller as well.

Try a monochromatic outfit – One really easy way to look slimmer and really chic is to pull off a monochromatic outfit. It would also help alot if you could wear a black or white monochromatic outfit since these are the two tricks that really help create the illusion of a slimmer figure. Remember that a monochromatic outfit doesn’t always have to be created with plain and solid colored pieces. You can incorporate prints and patterns to the mix as well to make it less boring or you can also choose to wear pieces with different textures to add interest to the whole look.

Make a statement – Just because you’re plus sized, does not mean that you can’t wear statement pieces. Whether it’s a cape blazer or color blocked stilletoes, you can definitely wear them as long as you possess the right attitude. The key to these style tips for curvy women is to not go overboard; remember to stick with one statement piece at a time.

Aim to boost your height – As a Plus-size woman, one thing that you should do is to aim to boost your height. Enhancing your silhouette vertically somehow stretches your outline so you look less ‘horizontal’. To do this, just opt for heels instead of flats. If you don’t find heels comfortable, you can opt for wedges instead. They cause less pain and they offer better support, too, so you can walk in them all day long if you have to.

Belt it out – Style tips for curvy women might sound complicated, but sometimes, it’s just as easy as wearing the right accessory. In fact, you can look slim right away simply by belting your outfit. Whether it’s a slim belt or an obi belt, the perfect belt can shave a few inches off your waist.

Downplay your accessories – Aside from making your outfits look fab, accessories help accentuate the parts of your body where they are laid so be careful when using them. Try not to wear huge, chunky statement accessories on areas that you don’t want to become noticeable like your hips, your tummy or your chest. If you must wear accessories, wear small and dainty ones instead.

Traverse the Seasons – There are summer pieces that look good on you (i.e. the maxi dress.) Although this staple won’t shield you from the rainy seasons, you can pull it off simply by following these style tips for curvy women. Of course, what you need to do is layer this outfit – and pair with cold-appropriate items. A leather jacket is just one of the things that can make your maxi dress a cold-ready outfit.
